Firstly an unusual aerial view of Tornado as it passed under the skew bridge at the end of the sea wall and into the station. As can be seen in the accompanying video it was coasting to a halt in the station at an adverse signal as it had caught up with the HST running before it. Fortunately, the signal cleared and it could accelerate away without stopping.DSC_0026 (19)

The Duchess of Sutherland had an easy time of it with it’s nine coaches compared to Tornado’s twelve but it would have to work much harder over the Dainton and then Rattery steep banks on the way to Plymouth. As the engine was designed to manage fifteen coach trains over the steep inclines of Shap and Beattock on the London Euston to Glasgow main line the Dartmoor grades would be no problem.
