Noel Downie was at South Brent on Dartmoor near the site of the long gone Junction station for the Primrose line to Kingsbridge. You can see the pantograph on the first coach which is used when testing the electricity supply on lines with overhead cables. Because of congestion of rail traffic at Newton Abbot station the test train returning from Penzance passes through there to Teignmouth where it can reverse over the crossing just to the west of the station and regain the down line which will then lead it to Paignton. It waits in the station for the Cross Country express to pass through as seen in the video.
After reaching Paignton the test train then heads non stop to Bristol Temple Meads where it then reverses and heads back to Taunton.
There was a second special train today the Saltburn Pilgrim where every other year a religious group have a special train to take them from Saltburn to Plymouth for the weekend, returning on Monday. The 10 coach train was topped and tailed by two WCR Class 57 locomotives which in previous times were operated by Virgin Rail as Thunderbird loco’s which assisted if any electric powered trains suffered breakdowns principally on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to the north of England and Scotland.
Loco’s concerned were formerly named 57313 Tracy Island and 57 315 The Mole.
